Space mission will grow Australian capability

SIBA|GITA welcomed an announcement in the Budget 2022-23 for almost $1.2 billion funding for a national space mission for Earth Observation. Phase one of the mission will include Australia designing, building and operating four new satellites – guaranteeing the data which is central to our everyday lives, while accelerating growth of our space sector. The Australian Space Agency will lead the work along with Geoscience Australia, CSIRO, Bureau of Meteorology and Australian Department of Defence.

It is estimated the mission will create more than 500 jobs over the build phase, with an anticipated supplier network of more than 100 companies from across Australia.
The Mission will make Australia more self-sufficient when it comes to critical Earth Observation data, while also growing capability and job opportunities that will set the industry up for future success.
