Message from the Chair of SIBA|GITA
Today I am pleased to update members on SIBA|GITA’s plans to work with our space, surveying and spatial sector colleagues and industry stakeholders towards a single agreed purpose focusing on the development of the Australian spatial sector workforce.
SIBA|GITA is positioning itself to collaborate with the Surveying & Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI) on plans to ensure the future growth of Australia’s space, surveying and spatial sector is secured by a skilled workforce.
SIBA|GITA General Manager Danika Bakalich will transition to a new strategic role on 29 September, supporting industry consultation around opportunities for workforce advancement by SIBA|GITA and SSSI. Danika will work with the SIBA|GITA and SSSI National Boards which will be developing plans to engage both memberships over the next few months.
As the need for space, surveying and spatial services and technology increases, workforce planning and development will be increasingly pivotal to ensuring the sector has access to the right skills and capability mix needed to meet demand.
Australia needs a relevant and skilled space, surveying and spatial industry workforce to be assured of a thriving industry in the immediate and emerging future.
Our work for members in coming months will continue to support branch activities and national awards but be more intensively focused on the workforce strategy. Please use the resources of our Business Manager Heather Hunt and the secretariat for any enquiries including branch support.

Mark Deuter named SA Professional of the Year
Congratulations to the 2021 winner of the SA Professional of the Year, longstanding SIBA|GITA member Mark Deuter, of Aerometrex.
Announced at last week’s APSEA SA celebrations, the award is conferred on a South Australian practitioner who is working in any of the disciplines of the surveying and spatial sciences whose professional achievements are acknowledged by peer citation as exemplifying the highest standards of excellence and ethical conduct.
APSEA said Mark has an outstanding spatial career spanning 46 years, of which he will retire from at the end of this year. He has been a huge contributor to the spatial industry, particularly in the last 16 years while at Aerometrex. Mark has been Managing Director since 2011, which, under his direction has seen the organisation grow from 15 staff in 2005 to 115 staff currently.
Mark was instrumental in listing Aerometrex on the Australian stock exchange, something that is rare for an Australian geospatial company.
Tasmania and SA have held their awards
The Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards are underway and conducted regionally across the Asia Pacific region, culminating in a national gala dinner at the annual Locate conference.
