Submission – House of Representatives Enquiry into Developing the Space Industry
A joint submission from SIBA|GITA and SSSI has been lodged for the House of Representatives Enquiry into Developing the Space Industry, which called for submissions in November 2020.
The Committee’s inquiry seeks to examine the breadth of opportunities presented by Australia’s space industry and what is required to strengthen support of our domestic and international space related activities. This includes the development of space technology and equipment, commercialisation of research and development, future workforce requirements, and international collaboration.
The primary purpose of the submission, prepared by SSSI's Tony Wheeler and SIBA|GITA's Glenn Cockerton, is to ensure that the politicians recognise the close association between spatial and the space sector. An excerpt from the submission is included below:
The Spatial industry depends upon space and space technologies such as earth observation and remote sensing, positioning, navigation and timing, and communications because these space-based assets supply the streams of data that power the commercial activities of many of Australia’s companies operating in the Spatial Industry servicing most areas of the Australian economy including agriculture, construction, property and land development, mining, energy, transport, advanced digital analytics, asset management, telecommunications, environmental management, Defence and emergency management.
By taking location information and applying geospatial capabilities to analyse and visualise the content, government policy and service delivery can become more relevant, targeted and efficient, both during emergencies and in business as usual.
The full submission is available for SIBA|GITA members to view on our website.

Celebrating International Women's Day
In the lead up to IWD2021, the industry celebrated the achievements of women in spatial, and sought to bring to light the many issues women still face today in terms of equality and gender parity. On Thursday March 4 two successful industry events showcased the outstanding achievements and driven leaders in the surveying and spatial professions.
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #ChoosetoChallenge. This call was championed at the Victorian IWD Breakfast seminar, featuring SmartSat CRC's Professor Allison Kealy, Cardno's Iris Stewart, and Amanda Green, Chief People Officer of Movember. The breakfast tackled a large range of topics, and featured table discussion, Q&A with panelists, and of course, a delicious breakfast. Our own SIBA|GITA Victorian Branch Chair Jacinta Burns also played a large role in presenting the event.
Webinar: Women in Surveying
Thursday March 4 2021
To celebrate 2021 International Women’s Day, SSSI presented a webinar showcasing some of the female leaders in our surveying profession and providing role models for what is possible for women in surveying to the next generation of our industry.
Many people believe that ‘you cannot be what you cannot see’ and our lack of female role models impacts our ability to encourage young girls and women into surveying careers. This seminar provided the perfect opportunity to reset the balance and show some of the talent and opportunities that are being realised by women in the surveying profession.
The Speakers
- Narelle Underwood | Surveyor-General NSW
- Kellie Dean | Principal Surveyor and Business Unit Manager, Spiire
- Jemma Picco | Principal Surveyor, Qld Department of Resources
- Inga Playle | Spatial Informational Specialist at Hydro Tasmania
- Amanda Khoury | Registered Surveyor and Chair Young Surveyors NSW
- Venessa O’Connell | Group Survey Manager, Port Authority of NSW
- Denise McKenzie | Director Benchmark Initiative, Geovation, Ordnance Survey
For those who missed the webinar, you can still view the recording in full here
