TOPIC: Innovation led to 3D Modelling the Tasman River

Fox and Associates managing director Carl Fox and senior surveyor Phil Dewar will talk about their innovative and collaborative project to develop a full 3D model of the river channel from stopbank to stopbank for the Tasman River.

Fox and Associates says local authorities throughout the country are grappling with the challenge of accurately modelling large areas of riverbed in the most cost-effective way.

"Traditionally this modelling has been based on cross-sections of the river corridor measured at specified intervals along the river. This is a time-honoured method which is very labour intensive and does not give a full picture of the channel,” the company says.

“Carl Fox had been convinced for some time that with the skills and tools at Fox & Associates’ disposal, specifically the UAV (Drone) mounted LiDAR, aerial photography and the USV mounted sonar (Unmanned Surface Vessel) Fox and Associates could efficiently provide a full 3D model of the river channel from stopbank to stopbank. We just needed a local authority willing to try it out, and the opportunity arose with the Tasman District Council.”

“The Council already had some experience with LiDAR data and UAV services, but full channel mapping would be a big leap forward which would enable better flood management and aggregate resource management.”

Fox and Associates won the Innovation – Small Business Award at the 2021 Spatial Excellence Awards for this project. Also the APSEA New Zealand awards and the overall APSEA Oceanic awards.

Although it might seem as if Carl was born to be MD at Fox and Associates, his earlier endeavours may surprise you. Carl studied a wide range of subjects during School and University including Fine Arts, Economics, Psychology, and Astronomy, pursued Architecture for a short time and even tried his hand at windsurfing instruction before he ultimately graduated with his Bachelor of Surveying in 1993.

Carl sees his role at Fox as the constructive challenger of client and team thinking. Being an eternal optimist, he believes that there is always a solution to be found when you sit down and discuss and explore the issues. As an all-rounder, he has great knowledge of each stage of the process and can take a problem, fit all the pieces together, develop creative ideas and then provide the leadership to ensure effective delivery of the final solution. something worthy and enduring - whether it be a subdivision development or an engaged and dynamic team.

Phil Dewar
Senior Surveyor
B.SURV (hons), MNZIS, Registered Professional Surveyor (RPSURV)

Phil conducts and manages a variety of survey projects and thrives on the challenge of finding creative solutions to tricky measurement problems. He excels at data analysis and works his magic to present it in ways that everyone will understand including those attending a technical presentation at Trimble’s Dimensions Conference in Las Vegas.

Since graduating in 2004, Phil has worked primarily in cadastral surveying and spatial measurement but also brings experience in resource management planning and engineering to the Fox team.
