The future of the industry is a hot topic across the ditch and initiatives are varied and creative. Geodesy will find a renaissance in climate change, pitching is promising, and diversity proves to be a secret ingredient in attracting and keeping talent. The value of reaching into new sectors and reframing our self perception was evident at both the NZIS conference in Nelson in April and the ASPEA New Zealand celebration in October 2018.
Australia and Japan both have urgent needs to forecast and manage disasters as they unfold. Real-time, sensor-based disaster response is top of the wishlist for government agencies in Japan. Agreement to collaborate on this theme as well as around Women in Spatial and youth engagement were outcomes of the GITA Japan conference held in Tokyo in September.
