The Spatial Industries Business Association (SIBA) is the new name for the Australian Spatial Information Business Association, which was established in Australia in July 2001. The Association arose out of a recommendation of the Spatial Information Industry Action Agenda, which is a process established by the Australian Government to assist emerging industries.
In 2009 the ASIBA Board resolved to put to members a change of name for the Association that would enable it to respond to a rapidly changing industry. One of the early drivers for the name change was to recognition that much of the industry's growth is being driven by non-traditional spatial companies. It also enabled the Association to assist in the launch of a SIBA in New Zealand.
SIBA in Australia has been an effective driver for change. It was instrumental in gaining recognition within government of the importance of spatial information and technologies to water resource management, national security and climate change. SIBA contributes to many inquiries at all levels of government in Australia and has led the way in delivering the first national economic study of the value of the spatial industry to GDP.
